FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What long-term benefits does massage therapy offer?

A: The benefits of massage can be unique to each person as well as universal. For most everyone massage, on a strictly physical level, increases circulation to muscles and all soft tissue, helping heal injured areas and bringing pain relief to over taxed muscles. On an individual level, massage can help a person learn to understand how emotional and mental stress sets up housekeeping one's body. Massage helps people learn to leave mental chatter behind in order to listen to the body's natural rhythms, if the person is ready to listen. Uninterrupted by demands from work, family, friends, society or even one's self, the body relaxes and can take time to release, connect to the spirit and find balance. Leaving mental chatter behind and regularly tuning into the body decreases stress and anxiety, and helps people enjoy being alive and in their bodies. Massage can be a sort of mini-vacation for the mind, body and spirit. The more often the body and mind relax and connect, the more accustomed we become to living our lives in a more relaxed and balanced way.

Q: Is it okay if I fall asleep during a massage?

A: Sure! This is a time for your body to do what it needs to do. I like to tune into my body when I get a massage, but there are times when I need to go to another world and zone out or fall asleep. You don't need to make conversation with the therapist during the massage unless you truly want to talk. As the therapist, being mostly quiet and asking a question every so often helps me feel and sense what my client needs.

Q: Is massage really only working if the pressure is very deep and somewhat painful?

A: Not at all! Each person is different and some desire very deep, intense work and some may need gentle, soft touch. Studies have shown time and time again that people who receive touch on a regular basis thrive so much more than those who don't. Recently a study showed that premature babies who received daily massage consistently left the hospital earlier than those babies who were not massaged. So, whether you want deep, intense massage or you prefer a lighter touch, massage will increase your circulation, deliver blood and oxygen throughout your body more effectively, thus healing injured areas, reducing anxiety and increasing your sense of well being.

Q: How quickly will I heal?

A: Chronic muscular conditions may have spent a long time making themselves comfortable in your body, so it is important to realize that you hold the key to healing yourself. Massage will decrease pain, provide relaxation, increase awareness and mobility and feel fantastic. Along with massage and bodywork, it is important for the client to look at environmental, emotional, mental, psychological, physical and/or spiritual components of his or her life that may contribute to chronic muscle conditions and life stress in order to make lasting change.

Q: I am too modest to take off all of my clothes, is it really necessary?

A: It is vital that you feel safe and comfortable while receiving a massage. Throughout the entire massage you are covered with a sheet along with a blanket. It is common that most people undress completely. It is not required that you take off your underwear but be assured that comfort is essential and modesty is respected at all times. All clothing is always kept on during chair massage.

Q: What if I make an appointment right after work I don't have time to shower?

A: No problem. There are always fresh towels and soap provided in the bathroom for those who want to freshen up after a long day.

Q: I feel too self-conscious about my body to have a massage, what if the therapist thinks I'm too: skinny, fat, hairy, sees my rash, notices I have acne, etc.?

A: A beautiful thing about massage is that it can help people learn to nurture and love themselves and truly appreciate and enjoy being in the body that they have. My intention as a massage therapist and body worker is to help people enjoy themselves through feeling how great it is to be alive in their bodies.
